MARIAH CAREY MOURNS THE PASSING OF HER MOTHER AND SISTER ON THE SAME DAY

Mariah Carey has announced the simultaneous death of her mother and sister over the weekend. The Grammy award winning singer, deeply affected by the loss, shared her grief in a poignant statement on Monday.

“My heart is broken that I have lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey revealed. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” The singer, who is 55, expressed her gratitude for having had the opportunity to spend time with her mother, Patricia Carey, in the week preceding her death, and requested privacy as she navigates this profound personal loss. Details surrounding the causes of their deaths have not been disclosed.

Patricia Carey, 87, was a respected former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish American heritage. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five time Grammy Award winner offered an introspective look at her complicated relationship with her mother. Carey described the relationship as a source of “so much pain and confusion,” attributing it in part to professional jealousy that surfaced at a young age. Despite their difficulties, Carey acknowledged her mother’s impact on her life and career, writing in the book’s dedication: “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Carey’s reflections on her upbringing revealed the lasting influence of her mother’s criticism, which she discussed in a 2022 interview with Gayle King. Carey credited her mother with exposing her to music, a testament to the complexity of their relationship.

The super talented singer’s relationship with her older sister, Alison Carey, 63, was also fraught with challenges. In her memoir, Carey disclosed that she had been estranged from Alison and their brother Morgan, describing their separation as “emotionally and physically safer.” Alison had previously filed a lawsuit against Carey for $1.2 million, alleging “immense emotional distress” caused by the memoir, which she characterized as “vindictive.”
